Snow Throughfall
Throughfall is the portion of precipitation that penetrates a forest canopy and lands directly on the ground. This portion can be easily visualized with snow throughfall. Evergreen branches often intercept a significant portion of snow, particularly early in the storm. The reduced accumulation of snow under the tree compared to the surrounding ground results in tree wells, which can be hazardous to people travelling in snowy forests.
