Snow Accumulation
Snow, being in solid phase, will only accumulate on cold surfaces where there is not enough heat to drive a phase change back into water. Shown here, snow crystals maintain their form when settled on a dog's thick fur coat. Snow crystals falling on the sidewalk in the background, meanwhile, immediately turn to water. After 20 minutes, precipitation had absorbed enough heat from the ground that the snow started "sticking" on the sidewalk, or accumulating as storage.
