Infiltration
Infiltration is a process by which water on the surface travels vertically by gravity through the interstitial spaces of the underlying soil. In your kitchen, this same process can be observed while preparing pour-over coffee. In natural settings, the water becomes groundwater. In the kitchen, it becomes coffee as it drips into the pot below. One worthwhile difference to note is that coffee grounds, particularly upon initial brewing, are positively buoyant which causes a rise in the surface of the grounds as water migrates to the bottom of the reservoir. This does not typically occur in soils.
